Conclusions

  • IT developments have made feasible a lab centered around small-group exercises and discussion. A course web management system and campus support of IT were key to achieving feasibility.
  • With students who are sufficiently mature to be trusted to learn from the reading on their own, group exercises can be a viable alternative to traditional lectures and labs.

Additional developments since course

  • Greater use of “instant feedback”: design group exercises that require the TA or instructor to grade parts of the work on the spot, in Intro. programming class exercises held in group lab (see other Drexel website by Herrmann, Popyack, et al.).
  • Graders are provided a grade sheet to record each group’s marks (could eventually become wireless tablet based marking system).
